5th Triennial Conference: "Ghana in Uncertain Times"

5th Triennial Conference: "Ghana in Uncertain Times" Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi | 21–24 July 2026 (virtual presentations only on July 21) Conference Theme This year's interdisciplinary gathering of local and international students and scholars of Ghana's past and present will engage a wide range of issues related to the theme, "Ghana in Uncertain Times." Between the last GSA Triennial Conference in Tamale and now, the country, and indeed the world, has experienced significant transformations with uncertain ramifications for government and the public alike. At the same time, Ghanaians have been conceptualizing and managing uncertainty for decades, if not centuries. The conference provides an opportunity for scholars of Ghana to wrestle with uncertainties past and present, and to suggest how Ghana and Ghanaians chart paths through the uncertainties of the future. Subthemes • Ghana within global economic and political uncertainties • Care and uncertainty (bodies, politics, and socialities) • Sexualities and gender identities in uncertain times • An uncertain present as transformative possibility for Ghana's future • Family and law in Ghana: historic uncertainties and new directions • Uncertainty in the archive and/or research • Knowledge systems and knowledge production • National borders and diplomacy • Party organizations, democratic resilience, and (anti-) corruption • Green politics • Media, modernity, and popular culture • Resistance and cultural hegemony in language and the arts • Leisure and sports • Ritual, space, and spirituality • Diaspora in society and politics • Arts, architecture, and the built environment • Student politics and activism

African Arts Futures Symposium

African Arts Futures Accra 2026 Artists, entrepreneurs, scholars, scientists and performers are pointing towards a Pan-African future where tech and art lead the way. This two-day symposium in Accra seeks to broaden the conversation beyond the success of AfroBeats and popular music. We query the infrastructures, ecosystems, and future-oriented strategies in performance, visual culture, and digital media that are needed for greater African sovereignty. This event builds on previous research conferences focused on digital media and music. African/diaspora researchers and artists will be centered in these discussions, focused on local expertise and insights of local cultural producers. African Arts Futures is being coordinated by an interdisciplinary cohort of scholars lead by Drs. Sally Afia Nuamah and Dotun Ayobade (Northwestern), Reginold Royston (University of Wisconsin, Madison-USA), and Kwabena Opoku-Agyemang (University of Ghana), with SSS Productions.
